A286 stainless steel is an age-hardened, austenitic iron-based alloy that is ideal for applications that are exposed to a wide range of temperatures over time. It has excellent oxidation resistance, even at high temperatures, and is commonly used for its superior creep strength.
Chemical Composition
The chemical composition of A286 stainless steel is as follows: chromium 13-16%, nickel 24-27%, molybdenum 1-1.5%, cobalt 1%, vanadium 0.10-0.5%, aluminum 0.35%, titanium 2%, carbon 1%, manganese 2%, silicon 1%, phosphorus 0.025%, sulfur 0.025%, and the rest is iron.
Inventory
A286 stainless steel is available in the form of sheet and round bar.
Trade Names
A-286 Super-alloy, A286 Steel
Features
A286 stainless steel exhibits high strength from -320 to 1000º F for extended periods of time. It also offers oxidation resistance with intermittent exposure to temperatures up to 1800º F. This material is easier to machine in the cold or hot worked condition and is weldable by most fusion techniques.
Applications
A286 stainless steel is used in jet engine components, fasteners, and springs that are exposed to temperatures up to 1800º F. It is also used in non-magnetic cryogenic tools. In the oil industry, exhaust parts, turbines, and valves require the high tensile strength and good corrosion resistance offered by A286 stainless steel.
